Saudi Arabia to Ban BlackBerry Services This Friday

August 6, 2010 by Avinash Leave a Comment

Bad news has struck both Research In Motion (RIM) and all BlackBerry users present in Saudi Arabia as the authorities there announced today that they would be blocking some of the BlackBerry services from this Friday. This decisions comes at the time when RIM is already having a hard time in the Middle East with several countries having an objection on the services provided by RIM.

The issue at hand is the handling of encrypted data from BlackBerry devices from its own server, unlike other vendors like Apple. This created a dispute between RIM and local governments on the monitoring of private data being transferred from BlackBerry devices. RIM has taken a stand that they will not allow access to the governments for monitoring the encrypted data in a statement issued which reads as follows:

“The BlackBerry security architecture for enterprise customers is based on a symmetric key system whereby the customer creates their own key and only the customer ever possesses a copy of their encryption key. RIM does not possess a “master key”, nor does any “back door” exist in the system that would allow RIM or any third party to gain unauthorized access to the key or corporate data.”

The decision taken by the Saudi administration coincided right in time when RIM launched its much awaited and hyped BlackBerry Torch Smartphone, said to be a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone 4 Smartphone. Also, the decision proved wrong the claims made by RIM’s chief technology executive David Yach who said while talking to Reuters that, “”I believe they’ll have trouble pulling the trigger to shut down BlackBerry, most governments in the world rely on BlackBerry.”

This decision is sure to hit RIM hard and setback its growth plan in the Smartphone market as the Middle East forms a huge chunk of the Smartphone users.

Dell launches its own browser ‘Secure Browser’

July 21, 2010 by Avinash 2 Comments

Dell has released its own browser based on the Firefox platform, called the Dell KACE Secure Browser. The Secure Browser uses virtualization technology
to provide a safer web experience to users and organizations.

When using the Secure Browser any changes or malicious files inadvertently downloaded from the Internet are contained within the secure browser, keeping the underlying OS and computer secure from hostile changes. Any changes resulting from browser activity may be quickly and easily reset to effectively “undo” such changes and return it to its initially installed state. Secure Browsers also offer the option of specifying “white” and “black” lists to control what processes may be started or what sites may be visited.

  • Provides a virtualized and contained Firefox v3.6 Browser with Adobe Reader and Flash plug-ins
  • Rapidly reset any changes made during normal use back to their initial state, enabling easy recovery from infections or attacks
  • View statistics related to the number of processes detected and blocked
  • Set white and black lists to limit access to known good sites, or prevent access to known bad sites to further limit the risk of attack and infection

Download: http://www.kace.com/resources/secure-browser

Size: 73.6 MB

System Requirements: Microsoft® Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP (32-bit only, 64-bit systems are not supported at this time)

Top 10 Geekiest Marriage Proposals

July 4, 2010 by Avinash 1 Comment

1. Super Mario

This sweet geek used FuSoYa’s Lunar Magic Super Mario hack to pose a proposal to his girlfriend spelling out “Lisa… will you marry me?” in gold coins. That’s one way to get the princess!

2. iPhone App

LinkedIn employee Bryan Haggerty developed an entire treasure hunt iPhone app for his elaborate proposal that sent girlfriend Jeannie  around San Francisco with her route forming a <3 symbol on a map. Once Jeannie had solved all the video clues she found Haggerty atop a hill waiting to pop the question.

3. Little Big Planet

One of many video game proposals, this was made slightly easier (as in no hacking necessary) with LittleBigPlanet’s level creation functionality — but that does not make this effort any less romantic.

4. iPod

This lucky girl gets the geek, a sparkly diamond ring, and an iPod with this proposal that took advantage of Apple’s engraving option in a pretty major way.

5. Chrono Trigger

If you read the description on this video, you’ll see that some serious work has gone into this super-romantic hack that adds notable locations, quotes and characters (including the cat!) from the couple’s real life. Aw!

6. Google Street View

Google employee Michael Weiss-Malik wasn’t satisfied with his proposal 1.0 (“simple heart-felt words exchanged during a quiet night at home”), so the 2.0 version took advantage of Google’s Street View pass near the Google offices. Sadly, it has now been replaced with updated imagery, but the memory lives on.

7. Megatouch

The company behind the Megatouch bar games system went the extra mile to help this Washington gent propose to his special lady via her fave Megatouch game. They even caught the moment on (shaky-)cam.

8. Twitter

image

It’s by no means the only Twitter proposal, but this might be the first via the micro-blogging site. The reply was a “yes,” although with a big “um” and an “I guess” thrown in. Maybe she was hoping for an iPod.

9. iPhone Ad

Here, the familiar iPhone ad format was given a more romantic marketing message in the hope of a special push of the “answer” button. Check out the Cover Flow demo near the start — we think that might have given Doris a clue as to what was to come.

10. LOLcats

Posted on Valentine’s Day, here is the very first I Can Has Cheezburger proposal. Fans of the funny site will be happy to note Loretta’s answer was delivered via the medium of LOLcat too.

3D without glasses likely by 2015

May 29, 2010 by Avinash Leave a Comment

Consumers will likely see 3D LCD TVs that don’t require people to wear polarised glasses out on global markets by 2015, according to a Taiwanese research group that showed off an early version of such a device this week.

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) displayed a 42-inch glasses-free 3D LCD TV this week, and the company can currently make them with screens as large as 65 inches, according to Stephen Jeng, director of ITRI’s 3D System & Application Division.

The technology is considered vital to getting 3D into more people’s living rooms. Analysts say most people don’t want to wear polarised glasses to watch 3D TV, and many balk at the price, up to $200 per pair for some of the glasses. The high price might make a person think twice about hosting a World Cup or Super Bowl party with friends.

A number of companies are working on glasses-free 3D TVs, mainly in Japan and South Korea.

The 3D TV concept took off early this year at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as most major TV makers, including Samsung Electronics, showed off sets that are 3D-capable, meaning people can use them as regular high definition (2-dimensional) TVs or as 3D TVs.

We are moving from Cloud1 to Cloud2

March 30, 2010 by Avinash Leave a Comment

The future of our industry now looks totally different than the past. It looks like a sheet of paper, and it’s called the iPad. It’s not about typing or clicking; it’s about touching. It’s not about text, or even animation, it’s about video. It’s not about a local disk, or even a desktop, it’s about the cloud. It’s not about pulling information; it’s about push.
iPad

We are moving from Cloud 1 to Cloud 2, and the iPad is the accelerator. Many of them haven’t even made it to Cloud 1—some are still on mainframes. The iPad that shows us what now is really possible—and that we all need to go faster.
