These Two Tweets Made Apple Share $17.26 Billion Increase

August 13, 2013 by Avinash Leave a Comment

This shows the power of Twitter. Or just the power of a billionaire on Twitter. At aroundĀ 2:20 p.m. ET, legendary investor Carl Icahn tweeted that he has a huge stake in Apple and then the stock jumped!

Carl Icahn Forbes Cover

Apple’s shares, which had been trading at $475.77 went vertical, gaining nearly $9 in less than 3 minutes. By 3:35 p.m. they had touched $494.66.

This is the first tweet:

We currently have a large position in APPLE. We believe the company to be extremely undervalued. Spoke to Tim Cook today. More to come.

— Carl Icahn (@Carl_C_Icahn) August 13, 2013

That was followed four minutes later with this tweet:

Had a nice conversation with Tim Cook today. Discussed my opinion that a larger buyback should be done now. We plan to speak again shortly.

— Carl Icahn (@Carl_C_Icahn) August 13, 2013

How many shares Icahn purchased, and what he plans to do with them — besides watch their price rise just because he tweeted about them — all remains for now a mystery.

Carl Icahn holds a 16% stake in Apple’s Siri partner Nuance Communications. He also acquired a 10% stake in Netflix and has previously taken stakes and pushed for changes at Motorola and Yahoo. [Read Wikipedia for more]

What’s your comment?Ā Is Icahn simply looking to increase his shareholder value or initiate a coup against Tim Cook and the Apple leadership? May be!Ā His Twitter bio line describes:

“Some people get rich studying artificial intelligence. Me, I make money studying natural stupidity”.

Apple’s Intention Towards Innovation [Video]

June 12, 2013 by Avinash Leave a Comment

When Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011, everybody raised a question – how will Apple survive without him? Apple answered all those critics in a remarkable video Jobs’ mission statement towards innovation.

Titled “Designed By Apple – Intention,” the video displays words set against simple design patterns and its definitely worth a watch!

Apple-ad-Designed-by-Apple-Intention

The simple words in the video (at the end of the post) appears to be a message to consumers of the company’s product quality and more of direct answer to media, tech industry and everyone. The company just answered its competitors like Samsung who make more phones and throw in every feature they can think of to innovate them. Apple doesn’t work in that way and won’t rush things to market.

We can see this attitude throughout the wholeĀ WWDC 2013Ā keynote presentation. Particularly, Phil Schiller unveiling the new Mac Pro said – “Can’t innovate any more, my ass!”

It says –

If everyone is busy making everything, how can anyone perfect anything?

We start to confuse convenience with joy, Ā abundance with choice.

Designing something requires focus.

The first thing we ask: What do we want people to feel? Delight. Surprise. Love. Connection.

Then we craft around our intention. It takes time.

There are a thousand no’s for every yes.

We simplify. We perfect.

We start over, until everything we touch enhances every life it touches.

Only then do we sign our work.

– Designed by Apple in California.

This is the best animation video I’ve seen during recent days. Did you like the video?

What To Expect In Next iPhone?

May 23, 2013 by Avinash 1 Comment

The latest and greatest iPhone is just around the corner.Ā  Whether the next release is the iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 remains to be seen, but there are several improvements that are almost guaranteed to be seen. There are also many concept videos circulating around the Internet.Ā Below are some of the improvements you can expect with the next release of the iPhone this summer.

iPhone 5S Concept

[Credit]

Similar Design as iPhone 5

If Apple holds true to their pattern since 2008, chances are that the next iPhone will have a design very similar to the iPhone 5.Ā  Their pattern the last few years has been to release phones on odd number years with upgraded internal hardware but little change to the exterior hardware.

iOS 7

iOS 6 did not exactly set the world on fire with its release, but this time around Jonathan Ive is in charge of the next set of upgrades and the chances of an improved iOS increased when he took over.Ā  Expect an upgrade to Siri and Apple Maps as well and knocking out some of the bugs from the last release.

Lower Cost

Asking users to pay $200 to $400 for the next iPhone could potentially spell disaster for the new release considering that comparable Android devices are selling much cheaper.Ā  Considering that Apple already had to slash prices in China and Brazil in order to compete, expect the same for the next release.

Improved Processor

Some leaked photos from iOSDoc have hinted at the possibility of a processor upgrade for the next iPhone.Ā  Odds are that the A6 dual-core processor will be replaced with the A7 quad-core.Ā  Most users won’t see a big performance issue but those that play graphic intensive iPhone gaming apps, watch HD movies, or run apps using a high processor load will see a huge improvement.

Camera Improvements

Considering that Apple always tweaks with their camera a bit with each upgrade, expect much the same with this release.Ā  The main improvement that we should expect is an upgrade to a 13 megapixel camera.

Do you expect any other major improvements?

Emotional Bill Gates Discusses Final Conversations with Steve Jobs [Video]

May 13, 2013 by Avinash Leave a Comment

We’ve heard Bill Gates talk about his last, emotional meeting with Steve Jobs before. First in the Walter Isaacson Steve Jobs biography and then again in a video interview with ABC, but last night Bill Gates once again discussed the final conversations in an interview with 60 Minutes.

In the following unaired footage from the interviews, Gates said he was able to spend time with Jobs while the then Steve was sick and that they discussed what the two had learned growing up as titans of the tech industry, families and other topics.

Young Bill Gates and Steve Jobs

Gates also talks about Steve’s sense of design despite very limited engineering background, his ā€œintuitive sense for marketing that was amazing,ā€ and his emotional last meeting where the two discussed a number of topics including products, family, andĀ the yacht Steve was having a built at the time.

Gates even admitted that, while Microsoft attempted tablets, Apple was able to build them ā€œin a way that succeededā€ and said that he wish he had Jobs’ sense of design.

I understand how Bill Gates has earned his name of being a class act through all his philanthropy work and attempts of making the world a better place.Ā Bill Gates is just a great person, the world would be far better place if more of the super wealthy followed in his footsteps.

Looks like, I’m going with T-Mobile. $600 less than AT&T, $1000 less than Sprint.

March 27, 2013 by Avinash 2 Comments

As expected, T-Mobile finally lands the iPhone. That’s six years after Apple announced first game changing device. The company will start offering iPhone with LTE support starting from April 12, 2013. Now that iPhone (especially iPhone 5) is available on all major US carriers, which carrier offers the best deal? After careful breakdown, looks like, I’m going with T-Mobile down the lane after my contract ends with AT&T.Ā T-Mobile is the clear winner on price — with a 16GB iPhone 5 and two years of service costing nearly $600 less than AT&T and Verizon and nearly $1000 less than Sprint.

Check out the comparison below.

T-mobile-iphone

Unlike AT&T, Verizon and Sprint – or most of the world’s carriers for that matter – T-Mobile will sell Apple’s device contract-free, tapping its previously mulled monthly installments in another uncharacteristic industry practice.

ā€œWe’re canceling our membership to the Wireless Carrier Club,ā€ CEO John Legere made jokes at the presser.

Specifically, per T-Mobile’s press release, you’ll be paying $99.99 upfront to get an entry-level 16GB iPhone 5, without a two-year service contract. The rest of the device’s unsubsidized price will be recovered through installment plans requiring you to drop an additional $20 over the next 24 months.

Mashable did a quick comparisonĀ for an iPhone 5 on Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

Sprint Simply Everything
AT&T
AT&T Mobile Share Plan
Verizon
Verizon Share Everything
T-Mobile
T-Mobile Simple Choice Unlimited
iPhone 5 price (16GB) $199 $199 $199 $99 down, $20 a month for 24 months
Monthly Bill $109.99 $110 $110 $70
Voice Minutes Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Text Messages Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Data Unlimited 4GB 4GB Unlimited (data may be slowed down after 5GB a month)
Mobile Hotspot $19.99 a month for 2GB Included Included 500MB included, additional hotspot data available at an additional charge.
Early Termination Fee Up to $350 Up to $325 Up to $350 None for new customers
Contract Length 2 Years 2 Years 2 Years No contract
Total Cost of Ownership Over Two Years: $3320, including mobile hotspot $2840 $2840 $2260

From the above chart, T-Mobile is the clear winner on price — with a 16GB iPhone 5 and two years of service costing nearly $600 less than AT&T and Verizon and nearly $1000 less than Sprint.

Under the new sales model, the entry-level iPhone 4S is also now available from T-Mobile for an upfront fee of $70, plus $20 per month for 24 months for a total hardware cost of $550.Ā Likewise, the iPhone 4 will set you back just $15 in upfront payment at the time of purchase, with a $15 monthly payment for the next 24 months, resulting in a total hardware cost of $375.

Also, every T-Mobile device (the iPhone included) remain locked to the carrier’s network until it’s fully paid for through monthly installments, at which point T-Mobile will unlock it so you can take it to another carrier, if you like.Ā T-Mobile will start accepting pre-ordersĀ for the iPhone 5 onĀ April 5 through its web site.

What do you think? Has T-Mobile successfully re-innovated itself as a carrier? Will this strange move change the US carrier industry?

Apple Executive Phil Schiller Attacks Android

March 13, 2013 by Avinash Leave a Comment

With less than 24 hours before the launch of the next flagship Android phone (read Galaxy S IV) , Apple executive Phil Schiller made some negative comments about Google’s open source mobile OS; besides bring up the “F” word – fragmentation.

According to Phil,

“When you take an Android device out of the box, you have to sign up to nine accounts with different vendors to get the experience iOS comes with,” he said. “They don’t work seamlessly together.”

…..

“With their own data, only 16 percent of Android users are on year-old version of theĀ operating system.Ā Over 50 percent are still on software that is two years old. A really big difference.”
